Please meet David Merrell, MD, board certified family medicine physician and primary medical provider at Carolina Medical Group. Dr. Merrell completed his residency in 2015, and worked as part of the Cone medical system in the emergency room, urgent care, and as a hospitalist physician, caring for patients admitted to the hospital. He also worked for several years at Syngenta as the regional health physician, providing medical care to their employees and assisting with health policy throughout North America.
Dr. Merrell earned his Bachelors of Science in business management and finance from Brigham Young University, his Doctor of medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and his board certification in family medicine and licensed medical practitioner from the North Carolina Medical Board.
Through all of his education and professional experience, what has remained most important to Dr. Merrell is his desire to empower patients to live the best version of themselves by imparting medical knowledge and evidence-based treatment options that best fit their specific needs and desires. He finds it very rewarding to see individuals and families come into the clinic with specific concerns, and then be able to provide a treatment plan that addresses that concern effectively.
Dr. Merrell grew up one of eight children, and some of his professional training was under his father, Dr. J. Craig Merrell, a prominent plastic surgeon in Virginia who taught him the importance of giving back through medicine by volunteering and then working for a time with Operation Smile, a global medical charity that repairs facial defects.
As devoted as David is to his profession, he is equally passionate about his faith and his family. He enjoys an endless list of DIY projects around the house, as well as woodworking, hiking, running, exploring, and all forms of water sports. And being actively involved with his family in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made patterning his life after Jesus Christ his most important priority, and the source of tremendous joy.
A favorite inspirational quote comes from Winston Churchill, “This is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”
